Trail Trash - Hansen Dam, CA

This (see photo above) is what I typically collect each day along the horse trail leading into Hansen Dam from Shadow Hills.

Everyday, beer cans and beer bottles thrown on the ground.

Do some of these riders think that this is a kind of offering to the poor or something? I mean really. Trash is NOT charity. Carry it out and deposit in trash can. Do NOT throw it on the ground or in the bushes...please.

Perhaps some shared space understanding and training is necessary here. I am working on it.

Why barefooting? I believe it makes one more aware of one's surroundings. You are part of the world, grounded and connected to it. Barefoot, you feel the connection to the earth, and therefore want the earth to be healthy and beautiful and pure...

There is a connection.

I do a lot of my running in canyons near my home. At the near end there is a corral system with 50 or more horses. So on my runs I see the same garbage you show in that photo. I've found the trash is worst near the canyon entrance and nonexistant 10 miles in. The only thing I can say about the "DO Not Litter" signs is they make good target practice. Face it, the unwashed masses couldn't care less about this planet.

Ted,

Recently I hiked from Big Tujunga to Little Tujunga and picked up over 200 cans among the rest of the garbage. More than 80% were clearly from one group of equestrians: the "Bud Light Riders"! These guys have been littering on every single trail between La Tuna and Gold Creek (incl Hansen Dam) almost weekly. They give us equestrians (and hikers) a bad rep.

We need to respond to this as a unified community. I'm open to suggestions.

Through a little investigating, I have found that many of the folks who routinely throw their beer cans on the ground see it as an act of charity almost.

They know that people can make money picking up cans. Over $1.00 per pound. So, they see themselves helping out people who are in a worse situation then themselves.

Of course the problem is that it is ugly and ruins the beauty of the area...plus, it is illegal to drink in the park!

I think that we need to do something about it. Some recycle cans would be good, that can be reached by equestrians.

It is mostly horse riders who are doing the littering by me. I know.

I look forward to a long-term solution.
